Datenschutzerklärung
Für die App „To The Sun“ und die Website tothesun.app. Stand: 29. Oktober 2026.
1. Verantwortlicher
Codefour UG (haftungsbeschränkt), E-Mail: developer@tothesun.app. Anschrift und weitere Angaben: Impressum.
2. Was die App an unseren Server sendet
Rechtsgrundlage ist Ihre Einwilligung (Art. 6 Abs. 1 lit. a DSGVO).

Schreiben Sie uns dazu an developer@tothesun.app.

Privacy policy
For the app “To The Sun” and the website tothesun.app. Last updated: 29 October 2026. If the two versions differ, the German version applies.
In short
- The app sends our server which map areas it needs and, for the weather forecast, the positions of the spots it suggests, rounded to about 1 km.
- The app sends ratings when you switch on “Share your ratings” – saying whether you were within 300 m of the spot you rated.
- The map, location services and Google Play are services of Google.
1. Controller
Codefour UG (haftungsbeschränkt), e-mail: developer@tothesun.app. Address and further details: legal notice.
2. What the app sends to our server
The app requests terrain and weather data from our server, terrain.tothesun.app.
Map data
For a search, the app downloads terrain, tree, building and path data for the surrounding area, in squares of one degree of latitude and longitude (about 110 × 70 km in Germany). This shows roughly which region is being searched. The app keeps this data on the phone for up to 60 days.
Weather forecast
For the forecast, the app sends the positions of the spots it suggests and, from each spot, points in the direction of the sun up to 300 km away, rounded to two decimal places (about 1 km). This happens after a search and regularly while the app is open. For your saved spots it happens when you check a spot in “My spots” and – if you switched reminders on – in the background at your reminder times.
Our server processes the requests to answer them. It fetches the forecast from the US weather service NOAA for an area of whole degrees of latitude and longitude and keeps it in memory for up to 6 hours.
IP address and protection against abuse
With every request our server receives your IP address. To prevent bulk downloading of our data, it counts requests per IP address (per /64 network for IPv6) per day in memory and discards the counts at midnight (UTC).
Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR (the app features you use) and, for protection against abuse, Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (our legitimate interest in protecting the service and our data from bulk downloading).
Ratings – when switched on
On the page of a suggested spot you can say whether the prediction was right and whether you liked it, and add a note. The app stores ratings on the phone. When you switch on “Share your ratings” (off by default), it sends them to our server so we can improve the app’s predictions.
A rating sent contains your answers and your note, the rated spot with its analysis and forecast, the time, the app version, whether you were within 300 m of the spot, and how accurate your GPS signal was. Please keep your note to the spot and the sky.
How long we keep them: ratings given within 300 m of the spot are kept as long as they help improve the app. All others are deleted six months after the rating.
The legal basis is your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR). You can withdraw it at any time by switching “Share your ratings” off; from then on new ratings stay on the phone. We delete ratings already sent on request by e-mail. Please tell us roughly when you rated which spot – that is the only way we can recognise them (Art. 11 GDPR).
Codes
When you enter a code for the full version, the app sends it, together with a random number for this installation, to our server, which checks it; after that the app re-checks it about once a week. For a code meant for one phone we keep that number and the time it was redeemed for as long as the code exists – that is what makes it work once. Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR (the full version the code unlocks).
Where our server is
Our server is a rented server of netcup GmbH, Karlsruhe, in a data centre in Nuremberg, Germany. netcup processes the data on it on our behalf, under a data processing agreement as required by Art. 28 GDPR.
3. What is stored on your phone
The app uses your location when you allow it in Android, and while the app is open, to find spots near you. You can withdraw that permission at any time in Android’s settings. Legal basis: your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR, § 25(1) TDDDG).
The app stores your saved spots, search results with the place of the search, ratings and settings on the phone as far as the features you use require (§ 25(2) no. 2 TDDDG). They stay there until you uninstall the app or clear its data; Android’s backup to Google is switched off for them.
The app creates reminders on the phone. When you share a spot, the app hands the spot’s name, time, score and position to the app you choose.
4. Google services
The app uses services of Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland. Google processes data as a controller in its own right, including in the USA; Google LLC is certified under the EU–US Data Privacy Framework.
- Google Maps: the map in the app is shown with the Google Maps APIs (Maps SDK for Android). Google receives your IP address, the map area shown, how the map is panned and zoomed, technical information about the device, a pseudonymous identifier of the map service and crash reports from the map service. The Google Maps/Google Earth Additional Terms of Service and the Google Privacy Policy apply, and we incorporate them here by reference. “Open in Google Maps” hands the position of a spot to your Google Maps app.
- Location: the app determines your location with the location service of Google Play services. Which location data Google itself receives is set by your device’s location settings (for example “Google Location Accuracy”).
- Google Play: downloads, updates and subscriptions go through Google Play; Google handles payment and tells us whether a subscription is active. Google Play's subscription component in the app sends Google technical logs about its own operation. If you allowed it on your device, Google Play gives us aggregated, anonymous crash and performance statistics.
Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR – the map, location and subscription are part of the features you use.
5. Website tothesun.app
The website is on our server at netcup in Nuremberg (section 2, “Where our server is”). When you open a page, the server receives your IP address and technical details of your browser and processes them for the duration of the request, to deliver the page. All content of the pages comes from this server. Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (our legitimate interest in an available website).
6. Your rights
You have the right of access (Art. 15 GDPR), rectification (Art. 16), erasure (Art. 17), restriction of processing (Art. 18) and data portability (Art. 20). You can object to processing based on Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR on grounds relating to your particular situation (Art. 21). You can withdraw any consent at any time with effect for the future. Write to us at developer@tothesun.app.
You can also complain to a data protection authority, for example the one responsible for us: Landesbeauftragte für Datenschutz und Informationsfreiheit Nordrhein-Westfalen, Kavalleriestraße 2–4, 40213 Düsseldorf, Germany.
7. Other points
Giving us data is voluntary; to search for spots near you, the app needs location permission. The app is meant for people aged 16 and over. If the app’s features change, we update this policy; the version published here applies.
